BREWER, Maine — The American flag flew high atop a ladder truck along Parkway South on Wednesday at the Brewer Public Safety building.

Several drivers honked their horns as they drove by the flag displayed by the Brewer Fire Department in memory of those who lost their lives in the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.

“It’s a hard thing to forget — 9/11,” said Brewer Firefighter Jim Burns.

The safety building houses two pieces of steel from the World Trade Center’s twin towers. The bigger piece hangs high in the fire department’s vehicle bay along with a flag remembering the somber occasion. The smaller piece from the South Tower is in the building’s museum, which is open noon-4 p.m. Wednesday.

Brewer Rehabilitation Center invited the firefighters to lunch on Wednesday, as a thank you for their work, said Burns.
