BREWER, Maine (NEWS CENTER) — Folks from northern and eastern Maine recognized important people in their community Thursday in Brewer.
The Red Cross presented awards to these heroes at its “Real Heroes Breakfast,” which is sponsored by NEWS CENTER.

This is a chance for the community to recognize people who act as heroes for northern and eastern Maine – including EMTs, firefighters, blood drive organizers, and overall influential people in our communities.
Each person receiving an award today was nominated by a member of their community and then selected by a committee of volunteers.

It was even hosted by NEWS CENTER’s own Chris Facchini and Steve McKay. The awards were presented by members of the community and sponsors of the event.
Chief Tom Higgins of the Bangor Fire Department, who both accepted a “real heroes” award and presented one, spoke to NEWS CENTER. He said, “It’s very special to have the Red Cross recognize the Bangor Fire Department in our 200th anniversary. And the work that we’ve done with the Red Cross in years past in establishing emergency shelters in the city. We worked with them last fall and installed 131 smoke detectors on a Saturday morning. So the Red Cross is important to our operations. They support us when we have fires, or more importantly the victims of fires. So it’s a great relationship for us to have.”
