“What would you like Brewer to look like in 2025,” is the question the city wants answered, City Planner Linda Johns said in a statement inviting residents to attend the meeting next week.

“Planning would be a fruitless exercise without a clear idea of the kind of place citizens want Brewer to be in the next five, 10 or 20 years,” she said. “Planning must start with a vision.”

The approximately 275-page comprehensive plan is available online on the city’s website, brewermaine.gov.

“The comprehensive plan is the basis for local ordinances,” Johns said. “The city will revise the land use ordinance [based on what residents want].”

The current plan calls for increased recycling and developing a strategy to attract people to Wilson Street, the downtown, riverfront and airport, and to develop neighborhood trails and bike paths.

Residents also wanted to entice wholesale trade and distribution businesses, high-tech industries and outlet stores to the city.

“We’ve met some of those goals,” Johns said. “The city has implemented [zero-sort] recycling, and the city recently created the downtown development district. We have the waterfront trail under construction, and the city has diversified.”

Residents can provide their input 5-7 p.m. Tuesday at a gathering upstairs at the Brewer Auditorium.

“Please join us and share your thoughts on where you would like to see Brewer in the future,” Johns said.
