BREWER, Maine — A woman allegedly threatening to jump from the Joshua Chamberlain Bridge on Monday evening was pulled to safety by Brewer police, according to a police official.

Police were called to the bridge around 8:40 p.m. when a family member notified police the woman had been threatening to jump, Deputy Chief Jason Moffitt said.

Police did not disclose the woman’s name.

Officer Ryan Freeman arrived to find the woman hanging over the guardrail, and he grabbed her arm and pulled her in, Moffitt said.

The woman tried to pull away, but Freeman was able to keep a firm grip on her until backup officers arrived and help him pull her onto the sidewalk, Moffitt said.

The woman was taken to an area hospital for evaluation, the deputy chief said.
